Hi, I’m Tim
I do research into exceptional human performance and try to explain it in plain language. This work continues to fascinate me, and I feel very privileged to do a lot of exciting stuff, designing experiments, analysing big datasets, writing for academic and mainstream publications, speaking to passionate audiences, learning from expert performers, and working with very driven people.
My research has been funded by a number of sources, including the Economic and Social Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research, the British Council, the International Olympic Committee, UK Sport, the England and Wales Cricket Board, and England Rugby. This work has been the driver for policy change within these organizations.
As well as creating new knowledge, I am passionate about applying my understanding of expert human performance and helping individuals, teams, and organizations to realize their potential. Here, I’ve worked with Le Mans winners, champions in ice skating, dressage, and high-board diving, Premiership rugby players, professional football teams, FTSE 250 CEOs, and SMEs. In this work, I draw on both my extensive experience in the field, and the knowledge gained from interviewing many of the world’s most successful athletes, coaches, surgeons, crisis managers, and business leaders.
In terms of official positions, I am Professor of Sport at Bournemouth University, a Chartered Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
My free time is spent with my young family, trying to remain fit, speed-hillclimbing, and producing music.
